Investor Profile: Nathan Barker loves snow and being in control of his investments
When he’s not helping businesses boost their user experience, Wellington’s Nathan Barker will most likely be found snowboarding, yarning about snowboarding clutching a fresh ale, or recovering from either in his sweet hammock.
A bit about me
Like a lot of snowboarders, I guess I’m a fairly chilled character. Life at its best is spent on the mountain with mates, topped off with apres beers European style, or in summer chucking a line in the sea and just chilling in my hammock listening to some tunes. I do get quite serious about burgers - Burger Wellington is a quality time of year. But I’m also quite ambitious and inquisitive, always keen to take on new challenges and learn new skills. I'm very keen to speak or present at a conference, so watch out!
I think my friends would say I’m a fairly patient guy and (hopefully) generous, who is always happy to lend an ear. I’m a bit of an Ayrton Senna admirer – the Brazilian Formula 1 driver. His passion, commitment and drive was encapsulating, but also his relentless motivation to make motor racing safer and fairer was inspiring. His fearless attitude really shone through, particularly in his driving, but he was also a great human who valued the importance of relationships and friendship. There’s an epic doco about his life – Senna – that is really worth a watch whether you’re a sports fan or not.
Why I invest with Hatch
I'm really interested in investing, but in the past, I’d found it quite boring and inaccessible. Hatch makes it easy, fun, engaging and best of all I'm in control.
I have a bit of a mixed portfolio, but I tend to do some research on company financials and love reading analyst reviews and ratings. While I'm all for responsible investing, Hatch gives me the chance to invest in those so-called sin stocks that I might not otherwise take a look at.
My current portfolio is really varied, ranging from Bank of America (BAC), through to American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) and Cheniere Energy (LNG) - I also hold a few ETFs but largely prefer to invest directly into companies. I’ve had some good ups (Digital Turbine) and downs (ConocoPhillips).
My investment tip
My only tip would be to do some research and don’t be afraid to take a punt, but most importantly think long term.
