FOMO or fear of missing out

Māori translation:
Definition

In financial terms FOMO or fear of missing out, is an emotional impulse to react on a stock because others are buying or selling it, rather than doing ones own due diligence or having a disciplined strategy.

The term is rooted in herd behaviour and recency bias. Social buzz and media attention can easily persuade the masses that the timing is right often resulting in reactive decision making.

We acknowledge and thank the FMA, Dr Karena Kelly and Brook Taurua Grant, the RBNZ and the Māori Dictionary for their research which helped us with te Reo Māori kupu for this glossary.
